Elastics (Gum Bands)

What the Elastics Do

Elastics are used to correct the bite relationship between the upper and lower teeth. They also help the upper and lower teeth interdigitate.

Either Dr. Komoroski or your assistant will teach you what elastics you will be wearing and how to wear them.

Elastics are to be changed 2 to 3 times a day since they lose their elasticity. If you experience some discomfort while initially wearing your elastics, use Tylenol or Advil for a few days until you get used to the elastic force.

Elastics are to be worn 24 hours per day unless you have been instructed otherwise. Remove your elastics only when you eat or brush.

Keep your elastics with you at all times. They may occasionally break and should be replaced immediately.

Try to not run out of elastics! Not wearing your elastics for even one day can set your treatment back. Elastics are only effective when they are worn consistently. Should you run out of elastics between appointments, please call our office. We will arrange for you to pick up a new supply of elastics at the office or we can send them to you in the mail.

If one of the hooks or attachments on the braces breaks, please do not wait until your next appointment. Notify us so that we can schedule sooner as not to delay your treatment.

Your orthodontic treatment is close to being complete! It’s up to you! The length of your treatment will depend on how faithfully and precisely you follow your elastic instructions. Remember, the more you wear your elastics, the sooner your braces will be removed.
